Should I Buy A Smart Thermostat?

You can’t go into a hardware or home improvement store without seeing an array of high-tech gadgets that allow you to operate everything from your security system to lighting, plumbing, and of course, your HVAC system.  For many of these devices, the appeal is convenience, but this convenience comes at a price.   But one of these items will actually pay for itself in just a few years . . . the smart thermostat.

What is a Smart Thermostat?

Like a standard thermostat, a smart thermostat can be used to control your HVAC system manually.  But because it can also connect to Internet, a smart thermostat allows you to control the comfort in your home or office remotely via a smart phone, tablet, or computer.  Smart thermostats are programmable.  This means you can set the system to be off while you are away from home, and then set it to turn back on and have your home at your desired temperature as you walk in the door.

Smart thermostats offer homeowners three main benefits:

Lower Energy Bills

Why cool an empty house?  With a smart thermostat, you can program your AC to be off (or to maintain a fairly warm temperature, such as 82 degrees) while you are at work, and then set it to be nice and cool during the hours you will be at home.  You can do the reverse in the winter, saving money on your energy bills all year round!  Depending on your temperature preferences (and which model you select), you may find that your smart thermostat pays for itself in just a year or two!

Better Performance

With a programmable smart thermostat, you will find that your house is more comfortable year round because you can fine-tune the temperature for the various time of day.  Many models have a learning feature that adjusts to your preferences so that after a few weeks, you no longer have to make manual adjustments at all.  These models can sense when you’re home and when you are not, adjusting the temperature accordingly and keeping the house comfortable even when your schedule is inconsistent.

Remote Control

It’s so convenient to be able to control the temperature in your home remotely. So if you leave for vacation and forget to change the settings, you can take care of it with just a click. Imagine not having to get up from the couch to adjust the temperature when you are in the middle of your favorite movie!
